We have some exciting self-guided activities launching this year; whether it's kayaking the New River, enjoying an audio tour, or becoming a Junior Ranger, there's something for everyone. Here is a list of what is available:

Geocaching: This is a fun way to merge technology and outdoor exploration. Can you find all of them at New River Trail?

Ivanhoe Birding Trail: Thanks to a grant from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation, the Friends of New River Trail, in partnership with the DCR, have developed 48 acres into a birding and wildlife watching area. The birding trail is 1.2 miles from the parking lot. (Ivanhoe Car Parking Lot - 356 Riverview Rd. Ivanhoe, VA 24350).

Eagle Watch: You may be lucky and catch a view of our resident eagle pair. Grab your binoculars and walk to the river's edge past the Discovery Center in the Village.

Self-Guided Walking Tours: As you enjoy your visit at New River Trail State Park, we hope you discover the fascinating stories that make the New River valley so unique. From the unique geologic history of the river to the railroad and mining history, the stories of this region are still evident to this day.

Tour of the Historic Village of Foster Falls: (1-mile loop) Launching June 15th! Come visit us.
Tour of the Austinville Lead Mines: (1-mile out and back) Launch date TBD. Check back!

Self-Guided Audio Tours: Listen to authentic local stories and immerse yourself into the rich history of this area.

Trail Quest: Get prizes by hiking a trail. The Virginia State Parks Trail Quest program offers rewards when you document your visits to state parks.

Wandering Waters: Get on the water and explore at a Virginia State Park. Get prizes just for doing so.

Citizen Science: Snap a photo for science. Upload photos of wildlife and plants along New River Trail using apps like Seek, iNaturalist, and Merlin to help us document wildlife over the years.

Wildflower Bloom Guide: New River Trail is a wildflower lover's paradise, offering a huge variety of native species during spring, summer, and fall. Bloom Guide will be available fall of 2024.
