Explore Bright Hope and Otter Lick Loop trails to learn more about Group Camp 7, the once segregated section of Pocahontas, and how the African American community used the area.

The group camping area was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and was used until the 1970s. It consisted of several cabins, a dining hall, administration building, and a lake with a swimming beach. Churches would often rent out the facilities and host summer camps for local youths, such as the Baptist General Convention did in the 1940s when they developed Camp Carey for girls. Today, all that remains is the lake, a brick retaining wall, and some building foundations.

The hike will cover approximately four miles and involves some bushwhacking. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Leashed pets are welcome. Please call (804) 796-4472 or email rebecca.whalen@dcr.virginia.gov.
