In honor of Virginia State Parks History and Culture Day, we welcome you to join park ranger and historian Joshua Lindamood at the Hillsman House as we explore the early years of Dr. Robert Russa Moton's life. Robert was born on August 26, 1867 to parents Emily and Booker Moton. Emily and Robert stayed at the Hillsman Farm for several years in Amelia County before Booker came and retrieved them and took them back to "Pleasant Shade" in Prince Edward County where he was employed.
We will explore Emily's enslaved role as the Hillsman's cook, Robert's early years in Amelia County, his formative years in Prince Edward, and some of his notable achievements from adulthood that made him a world-renowned educator and early Civil Rights pioneer.
