Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Have you ever heard of a vernal pool? It's now that time of year in Virginia where we will study this natural wonder and try to identify the critters inhabiting this temporary habitat. All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Cumberland Multi-Use Trail parking area for a short walk to explore a vernal pool nearby.

The round trip hike will be over one mile on uneven terrain. Please wear water resistant shoes. There is no fee to participate. This program is conducted in accordance with Virginia Law; park staff possess the proper permits and training to collect and briefly handle wildlife.
