It's Back: Avalanche Ice Cream Challenge

Are you brave enough to take on the 20-scoop, icy behemoth known as the Avalanche?

For over a decade, the Avalanche challenged the hardiest of individuals to consume 20 scoops of ice cream (plus toppings) in the span of an hour, without any bathroom breaks. Though many challengers threw in the spoon, several prevailed. Twin Lakes said goodbye to the challenge in 2020, but it is back for one day only this holiday weekend.

Individuals who sign up will compete for a chance to claim victory and a Virginia State Parks gift certificate. Groups interested in the supersized dessert can enjoy the chill at a leisurely pace, and “win” the bragging rights that come with finishing off the Avalanche.

Price of entry is $20, and pre-registration is required. Sign up by Saturday, September 3, by stopping in or calling the park office at 434-392-3435. Park staff will scoop and weigh the product to ensure fairness. Individuals will have one hour to complete the challenge. To ensure participants do not expel the ice cream, bathroom breaks are not permitted. Spoons will be provided.
