Chippokes State Park's Steam & Gas Engine Show

Saturday, May 31 through Sunday, June 1, 2014

Do you remember when the Maytag repairman showed up with a toolbox instead of a laptop?  Want to show the kids what life was like before programmable washers, Bluetooth equipped trucks, and fancy power tools?  Then be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, May 31 through Sunday, June 1, 2014 for the annual Chippokes State Park Steam & Gas Engine show.

Antique tractors will be on display and in tractor pulls throughtout the day.

Antique tractors will be on display and participating in tractor pulls throughout the day.

Can you imagine what it was like when a washing machine consisted of only a washboard, tub, and hand crank ringer? Or how planing a log required a two man team? Bring the kids along so they'll appreciate the modern technology they get to use while they tackle their chore list.

There will be plenty of action as volunteers and staff demonstrates the simple ingenuity of antique farming and kitchen equipment. You'll also be able to stroll through the Farm & Forestry Museum while looking at household equipment, toys, and tools from centuries past.

Antique saw mill demonstrations will be schedule throughout the weekend.

Antique saw mill demonstrations are scheduled throughout the weekend.

Stop by the old saw mill that will be milling lumber the old-fashioned way, watch demos of "hit n miss" engines, sit back and enjoy competitive tractor pulls, take a leisurely hayride around the park's historic outbuildings, or go on a guided fossil hike along the shoreline of the James River.  There will also be craft vendors, great food, and children's activities all day long.

The cost is just $5 per person. Children 12 and under get in free. The daily Virginia State Parks' parking fee is waived for this special event!

There will be hearth cooking demonstrations throughout the weekend.

Located in Surry, Virginia, Chippokes State Park features a full service campground, four housekeeping cabins, an ante-bellum mansion with formal gardens, visitor center, campstore/gift shop, and a variety of hike, bike, and horseback trails. (Sorry, the park doesn't have horses for rent.)

Pack up the kids, grab a picnic lunch, and don't forget your camera! You'll enjoy some time away from modern technology while learning a lot about the past. For more information about this event and other upcoming hikes, paddling trips, and activities, please click here for our events database.
