Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Partnership Provides New Public Access to the Shenandoah River
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps, Down River Canoe Company and the staff of Shenandoah River State Park, a beautiful new access point has been built near the southern terminus of Shenandoah River State Park. Creating this hardened river access point will help to protect the riparian buffer zone and decrease erosion on the river bank.

The Cullers tract was sold to the park, but included several easements, including one for access to the river. Steve Cullers also owns the land Down River Canoe Company occupies. As usage by local outfitters and other boating and fishing enthusiasts has put increasing demands on the DGIF boat ramp across the river, Down River Canoe Company and Mr. Cullers decided they would like to exercise the easement and allow people renting tubes to walk from their building directly to the river. This spring, park manager Tony Widmer, John Gibson owner of Down River Canoe Company, and landowner Steve Cullers got together and decided to build an access point that would benefit both Down River Canoe Company customers and park guests.
This new access point is a great addition to a heavily utilized park. This public/private collaboration has allowed us to create an environmental friendly river access point at the southern end of the park.
If you didn't see it, be sure to read the blog article about the young women of the Youth Conservation Corp crew that worked so hard to complete this access point.
