Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Type of birds
It's common to see bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, egrets, several species of ducks, vultures, hawks, woodpeckers and songbirds. While you may not see owls here at night, you will hear them.Best time of year to observe
Most of the birds can be seen year-round, but the best time is fall and spring.Best places in the park to observe
The park has several overlooks on the Staunton and Dan rivers. From those overlooks guests see abundant waterfowl. While hiking River Bank Trail, guests also encounter many birds. Many songbirds frequent the park's pollinator fields, and visitors are likely to see hawks on the hunt.Special birding programs and events
