Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park is in central Virginia (Piedmont).

Type of birds

Meadowlark, towhee, kestrel, northern harrier,cormorant, great blue heron, junco, crow, warbler, cardinal, nuthatch, wren,indigo bunting, tanager, red-tailed hawk, robin, mockingbird, sparrow, vireo,phoebe, oriole, grosbeak, flycatcher, sapsucker, woodpecker, mallard, starling,hummingbird, chickadee, turkey, finch, bluebird and many other species call the park home.

Sightings vary seasonally as various species migrate. 

Best places in the park to observe

Several trails here offer views of creek valley hillsides, scrub brush, grasslands, thickets and forested areas frequented by a variety of birds.

Special birding programs and events

Sailor's Creek Battlefield offers at least one major program dedicated to specific birds or classes of birds (e.g., birds of prey) each year.
