Ownership of Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Interpretive Center in Scott County transferred to Virginia State Parks

DUFFIELD – Ownership of the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Interpretive Center in Duffield has been transferred from the Scott County Economic Development Authority to Virginia State Parks. Virginia State Parks, managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, has operated the center as a satellite of Natural Tunnel State Park since its opening in early 2019.
“Virginia State Parks is humbled to take ownership of the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Interpretive Center and looks forward to helping future generations of visitors understand the significant role Southwest Virginia and the Wilderness Road have played in our country’s westward expansion from the 1700s to today,” said Western Field Operations Manager David Collett.
The center serves as a regional tourism gateway, linking visitors to other historical and cultural venues, such as Natural Tunnel State Park and Wilderness Road State Park, and impacts other area attractions as well.
Located directly in front of Kane Gap, one of the last undeveloped portions of the Wilderness Road, the center offers a glimpse of the rough, unforgiving terrain early settlers traversed on their way to Kentucky. The 10,000 square foot facility includes a theater and museum displays highlighting the story of early settlers who made their way westward, as well as a research library, conference room and gift shop.
The interpretive center, a partnership between the Scott County Economic Development Authority, the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Association and DCR, is the result of a culmination of state and local support.
The new center is open Friday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are no admission fees for the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Interpretive Center. For questions or additional information, call the interpretive center at 276-431-0104.
