Habitat: Mesic to dry forests, woodlands, barrens, clearings, old fields, pastures, and road banks. Common in the mountains; frequent in the inner Piedmont; infrequent to rare in the outer Piedmont and Coastal Plain. This is the most common highbush blackberry in the Virginia mountains, occurring primarily from 300 m (1000 ft) to over 1600 m (5250 ft) elevation.

Habitat: High-elevation forests, boulder-field woodlands, balds, clearings, and old fields; restricted (or nearly so) to elevations above 1070 m (3500 ft). Infrequent to locally common (in high-elevation landscapes) in the sw. mountains, north to Giles and Floyd counties. Apparently isolated populations occur on Reddish Knob and Elliot Knob in Augusta County, and Sounding Knob in Highland County, but this species may have been overlooked (and should be sought) in other high-elevation areas of wc. and nw. Virginia.

Habitat: Ubiquitous in a wide range of natural and disturbed habitats, including floodplain forests, swamps (all types), wet flatwoods, mesic to dry upland forests, woodlands, clearings, old fields, and roadsides. Common in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; less so and mostly restricted to lower elevations in the mountains. This is the most common highbush blackberry at lower elevations in Virginia.
