Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

The Central Piedmont Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists is hosting a Wildflower Symposium at Bear Creek Hall on Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to noon. Cynthia Wood is our featured speaker. After introducing the plants of the area, she will lead a wildflower walk over moderately level terrain. Attendees will receive a copy of the bloom calendar for native plants in our area. After refreshments and door prizes, there will be brief talks on edible and useful wild plants including foraging safety, wildflower recipes, yarrow as a medicinal plant, and primitive technology.

The event is free but is limited to 45 people. Registration is encouraged. All ages are welcome. Donations will be accepted. To register, email Regina Schwabe at gwpchi@mindspring.com. Bear Creek Hall is accessible to those with physical impairments.
