April 8, 2024. 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

A solar eclipse, when our moon passes between the earth and the sun, briefly darkening the skies, happen often around the earth but are not often visible from Virginia. Today our area will witness the moon blocking out about 85% the sun and a great opportunity to view a celestial event. Caution should be taken, however, to avoid eye damage and in order to make viewing of the eclipse safe, the park will have a limited number of eclipse glasses for sale at $1 plus tax. For your viewing pleasure there will also be a free pin-hole camera workshop at the Lakeside Snack Bar beginning at 1:20 p.m. Pin-hole cameras are a sheet of cardboard with a hole that allows people to watch the eclipse event indirectly. Do not look directly at the sun even as the shadow crosses.

The disk of the moon crosses and blocks the sun during an eclipse.
