Winter Hiking Tips: Grayson Highlands
Some people reserve outdoor activities for summer. However, winter 2019-2020 is here. Winter doesn't mean you have to stay indoors.
Parks like Grayson Highlands State Park have great trails to enjoy time outdoors even during the winter.
Hiking provides views that might be blocked by leaves during the summer months
Winter hiking offers a wide range of reasons to venture out in the cold weather. The fresh air is one of the most cleansing things offered in nature. The air opens the lungs allowing thoughts to clear and stress to relax. The simple beauty shifts too; without leaves, views that are blocked during the rest of the year become visible. But nothing is more valuable than the memories you can create.
Here are just a few tips to make the most of the time spent outdoors:
1) Having a plan is vital for a successful day on the trail. In the mountains, especially Grayson Highlands State Park, the weather can change with very little warning. Make sure you know the day’s forecast and have clothing, equipment, and supplies to be safe during your hike.
Wearing clothes that can be layered is important. That allows you to add clothes without being too bulky.
Layering clothes helps keep you safe and warm
Have plenty of food and water. Water is heavy (a gallon weighs approximately 8 pounds) but is essential. The food is best if nutritional but easily stored and carried.
High protein foods help to keep energy up throughout your day of hiking
2) Remember that you are going to be walking through animals’ homes. Review suggested tips of hiking in the wild. Take out everything that you took on your hike. Trash left behind may attract some unwanted guests along your hike.
One of the iconic scenes at Grayson Highlands is the wild ponies. While they are often photographed and the topic of hiking conversations at the park, please remember that these ponies are not tame. Caution should be used when viewing them. Please do not try to feed them, pet them or get close to them.

3) When hiking, any time of year, you should also share your plan with a friend or family member. Getting away for the day may be the goal, but we want you to make it home without incident. Sharing an approximate return time and direction of hike, can make all the difference.
And of course, the buddy system (hiking with someone else) should always be considered as an option.
The buddy system not only keeps you safe but helps build memories as well
If you are interested in hiking at the park but you are uncomfortable striking out on your own, the park offers guided hikes throughout the year. Check back here for the most up-to-date schedule of guided hikes.
