Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Waggin' Trails: I'm Famous
Hey yawl, Junie B here and I have a confession, I never set out to make a name for myself, 'cuz I'm just a simple Jack Russell who loves Virginia State Barks.
Mum and Dad have been takin' me and my big sisters to Virginia State Barks for years and I like to tell yawl about it so you don't miss out on the fun. That's the kind of dawg I am.
Dogs are welcome at Virginia State Barks (except there is one weird stipulation about enterin' via a raft or somethin' at False Cape State Bark, but Mum says there are cottonmouth snakes there and I shouldn't go to that bark anyway). See Virginia State Barks pet policy here.
Here I am on a hike with Dad at James River State Bark
Somehow the photo above has gone viral, Dad thinks it is his foot and two legs that made it sexy, but if two legs are sexy than four have to be even more sexy, right?
Actually I think it is just that I am the perfect image of a dawg havin' funzy wunzies. I am a well behaved dog, I am on an approved Virginia State Barks leash. No one has commented yet, and I have tried to not draw attention to the Pittsburg Steelers bandana my sister made me wear, they are not really my team anyway.
Here are some of the places I am featured
I was used in this article "Get Fit Not Injured"
And these articles:
- Walking the dog New York Style
- Easy Sports for Healthy Dogs
- Trail etiquette for hiking with dogs (I would have called this Petiquette myself, there are lots of good comments on this article by NW Outdoor Grrl)
- Man’s Best Friend Trail Tips – Hiking with your Dog
- 7 Pictures of Dogs Having Tons of Fall Fun (I am even the giant header photo on this article by Purina)
- Six Tips for Dog Adventurers in Forest Park (This one is from Northwest Portland along the eastern slope of the Tualatin Mountains)
What other things can dawgs do at Virginia State Barks?
PLAYIN' GAMES
Dawgs can play Yahtzee and board games with their families in the cabins
HIKIN'
It is a family tradition to go for a First Day Hike at Smith Mountain Lake State Bark
PADDLIN'
Paddlin' a kayak on a warm August day was sure funzies
FLYIN' A KITE
There is a great big field at Staunton River State Bark that is perfect for flyin' a kite!
BEGGIN' FOR BACON
Dawgs beggin' for bacon is one of my all-time favorite activities when we go to a Virginia State Bark
NAPPIN'
Sometimes after a long hike we just like to rest while Mum catches up on work
If you want to learn more about cabins at Virginia State Barks, then tell your family to click here. I first learned about goin' to the barks overnight by seeing Yoda Heltman and family at a cabin at Chippokes State Bark. They will have to pay a $10 per night fee for you to stay with them, but it sure beats going to a stinky flea-infested kennel.
Calling all cool dawgs
Remember, paws were meant to get muddy!
