Virginia is Calling
If one park is the epitome of Americana to me, it would be New River Trail State Park. It isn't because of the age of the park, or the area, as there are older parks in the Virginia State Parks system. She just feels a little bit country, whereas Natural Bridge State Park is a little bit rock and roll.
Perhaps the whole train history at the park captures that overall Americana image, since I love trains and appreciate how they astonishingly transformed our American culture.
But at New River Trail State Park visitors can enjoy good old fashioned fun like cycling and riding the trail at this 57-mile linear park that follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way. Sometimes we mention "walking in the footsteps of history" but at this park you can ride on them.
The park's livery offers guided horseback trail rides from the Foster Falls area, and a rentable horse arena for special events. You can also rent canoes and bikes, and there is a boat launch. The park hosts special events like the New River Challenge Triathlon, and also Equine events in the arena a few times each year.
Fishing
Maybe we didn't invent fly-fishing in America but we sure have perfected it
Fishing is very popular at New River Trail State Park since it parallels the New River for 39 miles. The trail is mostly flat and even with a gentle slope making it perfect for bike riders, hikers and horseback riders of all ages.
Trail Rides
Yes, you can spend time on the trail and explore the park via horseback
Guided trail rides are available at the Livery April through October (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Call Foster Falls Horse Livery, 276-699-2460, for rates and reservations.
BYOH
Bringing your own horse? Except for a two-mile section from Galax to Cliffview, the trail is available for horseback riding. Equestrian campsites are available at the Cliffview campground. No stalls or covered area for horses but there are hitching posts. Learn more about the park's recreation here.
