For decades, families have been flooding to this park to experience a few days in the amazing Appalachian Mountains. Hungry Mother State Park is one of Virginia's finest recreational wonders.

When faced with all of the activities Hungry Mother State Park offers, families may feel overwhelmed. So here are my top 5 family activities to include in your next Hungry Mother vacation.

1. Go for a Swim in the Lake

For a small fee, your whole family can enjoy a day in the sun and sand. Hungry Mother provides a changing area and locker to keep all of your possessions safe while you're enjoying a dip in the lake. You can refuel after swimming by stopping by the snack bar. Make sure to bring your pails and shovels so you can build a sandcastle on the beach.

2. Rent a Paddleboat or Standup Paddleboard (SUP) at the Dock

Taking a paddleboat or SUP out on the lake is the perfect way to capture all of the natural beauty Hungry Mother State Park has to offer. The 108-acre lake is home to many different types of wildlife. There is always something spectacular to capture your attention, from catfish to ducks.

3. Take a Hike…Literally

The views are amazing.

Hungry Mother has trails for everyone, whether you are a beginner or a hiking expert. The Lake Trail is a great way to walk around the park and fully immerse yourself in nature. The trail takes you all around the park and is perfect for beginners. If you are looking for more of a challenge, try hiking all the way up to view Molly's Knob. Although Molly's Knob is just under two miles from the trailhead, the terrain is rated difficult because of the elevation change on the trail. Once you've made it to the peak, the view is more than worth the hike.

4. Make it a Long Weekend

5. Stop by the Discovery Center

The Discovery Center is a great resource for families to learn about Hungry Mother State Park's interesting and rich cultural history. Families can learn the legend of Hungry Mother and browse through different exhibits depicting wildlife in their natural habitats. Staff is available to answer questions and share information about park amenities and activities. The Discovery Center also has a great gift shop, so it makes it super easy to stock up on all of your souvenirs.
