Top 3 Heart Pumping Hikes at Virginia State Parks
Those who hike these Virginia Mountains know the whole no-pain no-gain theory only too well. There is no easy way to get to that breathtaking vista where you can escape the crowds, and see for miles and miles without having to work for it.
If you want to accomplish something that most visitors to these parks haven't, and if you think you are up for the challenge, then hit three of the most heart pumping hikes in Virginia State Parks.
1. TUSCARORA OVERLOOK - DOUTHAT STATE PARK
The reward from this strenuous hike is the view of the Allegheny Mountains and Douthat Lake
Plan out the trails to reach the Tuscarora Overlook at Douthat State Park
A hike to the Tuscarora Overlook is not for the faint of heart, but offers some of the most scenic views at Douthat State Park hands down. You will need to plan in advance the trails to take to get to this overlook. This also means allowing enough time, so choose a sunrise versus a sunset hike, or you may be travelling back down the trails in the dark.
This park features more than 43 miles of hiking, mountain biking and bridle trails, with all of them showcasing the beautiful great outdoors.

2. MOLLY'S KNOB - HUNGRY MOTHER STATE PARK

Molly's Knob Trail is just one of many scenic hikes at this park and well worth the visit
Be prepared for awesomeness at this park, as when the steepest part of Molly's Knob Trail ends you will find yourself on the Vista Trail so just follow it to the end for spectacular views. There are a few overlooks along the way to stop and catch your breath.
Molly's Knob Trail at Hungry Mother State Park can be done as a loop for a change of scenery with the CCC Trail, where you will encounter a totally different terrain of a very fertile forest and lake views you return. Or you can make the climb up, take in the view, snap photos then hike the same route back down. This is the most direct route.
There are more than 17 miles of hiking, biking and self-guided trails at this park that are open year-round.

3. CABIN CREEK - GRAYSON HIGHLANDS STATE PARK
Cabin Creek Trail takes you off the beaten path to discover these scenes at Grayson Highlands State Park
Plan ahead to ensure you are well prepared and have enough time for this super scenic hikes
Cabin Creek Trail offers you two special rewards for your labor, first a refreshing cascading waterfall, and then a 200 year-old pioneer cabin with panoramic vistas. The park also offers access to the Appalachian Trail and trails in the surrounding Jefferson National Forest. The air doesn't get any fresher.
Grayson Highlands State Park is near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, Virginia's two highest mountains, Grayson Highlands offers scenic views of alpine-like peaks more than 5,000 feet high. Weather can change without a moment's notice, so pay attention to warnings before you go and be prepared. The park has 13 hiking trails which vary from .5 to just over 2 miles in length.
