Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Natural Bridge State Park. I'm still getting used to hearing it and many of us here at Virginia State Parks keep saying "Natural Tunnel State Park" by mistake. After all, for our careers we have been explaining to people that Natural Bridge isn't a state park.

But on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016 it will become the 37th Virginia State Park with great fanfare. It is an appropriate day for its opening since it's National Public Lands Day, a day we celebrate the land of the people - parks and other properties protected by the government (at all levels) for us all to enjoy. OUR PUBLIC LANDS.

Admission to the Park will be free for the day.

Not just the bridge

So much more than the bridge --
the 1500 acres feature incredible vistas like this one of the Blue Ridge Mountains

In 1774, Thomas Jefferson purchased the bridge and 157 surrounding acres from King George III of England for 20 shillings. The bridge passed from one private owner to the next and became a tourist destination. For nearly 250 years the Bridge stayed in private hands and that was fine; until it wasn't.

In May 2013 then owner Angelo Puglisi announced his plan to sell the Natural Bridge complex before the end of the year. Local communities passed resolutions (Rockbridge, Lexington and Buena Vista), and land trusts across the state and nation urged a positive outcome.  The Valley Conservation Council and Rockbridge Area Conservation Council  assumed leadership roles and hosted tours, wrote articles, encouraged support and formed the Friends of Natural Bridge.

On Feb. 6, 2014, the dream to ensure the protection of the bridge in perpetuity came together thanks to the non-profit Virginia Conservation Legacy Fund and its leader Tom Clarke. Puglisi gifted the bridge and 188 acres of the property — valued at $21 million — to the fund. The nonprofit group agreed to pay for the remaining 1,300 acres with a loan from the Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund, from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Resources Authority.

National Historic Landmark

While the Commonwealth will not own the Natural Bridge property until the debt is paid off, Virginia State Parks will begin management of the approximately 1,500 acres and facilities. The State Park does not include the Natural Bridge Hotel and Conference Center or the Caverns at Natural Bridge.

Natural Bridge is located just off Exit 175 on I-81 in Virginia between Lexington and Roanoke:

Look for the park's website and more information on the park coming soon.

COMMENTS

Virginia State Parks (September 15, 2016 08:13:24 PM): Corey - We are finalizing the fees and how our regular annual pass works. We are working with the land owners on a way that the night show can continue. We will be operating the park but will not own the property until the debt is paid.

Corey Reynolds (September 15, 2016 07:37:29 AM): How will the fees work if you have a yearly, or lifetime parking pass?
Also, will the "Drama of Creation" continue? It is historical, to the park and I, for one would hate to see it go away.

Virginia State Parks (September 11, 2016 05:14:22 PM): The current owner closed the wax museum right after they took over.

Brendalin Rivera (September 11, 2016 04:23:12 PM): Are leashed dogs allowed?

Evonne Kelley (September 09, 2016 11:33:40 PM): What about the wax museum? Did that stay with the park or will it be a separate charge.

Sue Leon (September 09, 2016 02:40:28 AM): So excited about Natural Bridge becoming a part of the Virginia State Park system. Protected for generations to come. Congratulations!

Debbie Harlow (September 07, 2016 07:37:33 AM): My husband and I spent our Honeymoon there On Father's Day 12 years ago. We went back and redid it 10 years later. We love to go there it is such a beautiful place. Also so many memories we can share. We enjoyed it so much we put Natural Bridge on our license plate. We live in a small town on the other side of Harrisonburg Virginia. Look forward to going there again one day.

Plastic (September 06, 2016 05:37:22 AM): I like Natural Bridge State Park.

Kimberly Mann Humphries (September 04, 2016 05:20:33 AM): Do you happen to know if the Drama of Creation will continue as an evening attraction as it has in the past? It's been such a joy to share. Last year during Homeschooling Week, my family was blessed to have four generations enjoy it together! As a former State Parks employee, Natural Bridge becoming a State Park is so thrilling!

Virginia State Parks (August 31, 2016 11:24:49 PM): No we are not getting the caverns as part of the state park.

Catherine bowman (August 31, 2016 10:58:50 PM): Will the cavern become part of the state park?

Virginia State Parks (August 31, 2016 08:23:59 PM): No we have the Bridge and trails. We are developing the master plan now which will determine where the park heads from here. There is a KOA not far away.

Debra Flick (August 31, 2016 07:23:23 PM): Campsites available ?

Virginia State Parks (August 31, 2016 05:23:23 PM): There will be a per person admission fee to the Bridge area (through the gate to Lace Falls on the Cedar Creek Trail). There are two other trails at the park that are not accessed that way and there is no parking fee. We are still working on the fees.

Martha Willimas (August 31, 2016 02:22:49 PM): Will there be a charge each time we visit. Thinking the State Park is usually just pay to park. Or can you explore on your own and pay for a shuttle? Beautiful place
