Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

How do you know when spring arrives?
There are obvious things that say spring is around the corner like that beautiful shade of green when leaves are emerging, flowers blooming, and more people using the trails and fishing spots.
In the world of Virginia State Parks, there are other tell-tale signs as well. Everyone can see the park rangers working on facilities, mulching and adding staff. But there is one more thing at Hungry Mother State Park: The Restaurant at Hungry Mother State Park is ready to open.
The Restaurant at Hungry Mother State Park is a community favorite
Hungry Mother State Park has one of the only two full service restaurants within the Virginia State Park system (the other is located at Douthat State Park). The Restaurant (yes, which is the actual name) is known for a remarkable menu filled with family favorites. Of course, I have my favorites. For lunch, I love the chicken salad croissant, and my dinner favorite would be the chicken tenders. I have to admit I am intrigued by an item I just noticed this year, Molly’s Cheesy Chicken. How can you go wrong with a grilled boneless breast of chicken with sautéed mushrooms, apple wood smoked bacon, melted cheddar cheese and mozzarella? And the rolls, oh my goodness, the rolls are outstanding. The dinner menu also features burgers, steaks and seafood. The soup and salad bar is always available as well.
The soup and salad bar is always available as a side to any meal or a meal in itself
The Restaurant will open on March 25 for the 2016 season*:
