Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

So you haven't picked a family vacation spot for this summer yet? Don't panic, here are five reasons why Virginia State Parks are an excellent choice for a family getaway.

1) Your vacation can be anything you want it to be

No matter what your interests are you can gear your vacation towards them. Are you looking for adventure? Go tubing at James River State Park, bouldering at Grayson Highland State Park, or kayaking at New River Trail State Park. You can hike on the Appalachian Trail at Sky Meadows State Park. Or, are you a history buff? Many parks offer historical exhibits or attractions. Be sure to visit the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum at Pocahontas State Park, Southwest Virginia Museum State Park, Staunton River Battlefield State Park, or Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park. Maybe you prefer to try different outdoor activities? Check out geocaching, fishing, bird watching, swimming, or attend a park program. Music fan? Attend one of the many music events or festivals that are offered at parks across the state.

2) It's affordable

From tent camping to furnished cabins, there are a variety of lodging options to fit everyone's budget. Forget about paying kennel fees because dogs are welcome at Virginia State Parks. Plus, there is no need for airfare or other travel expenses that are often incurred on family vacations.

3) It's relaxing

Who needs crowds, long lines, excessive noise, or tight quarters? These things are not issues at Virginia State Parks. In addition, you set your own pace for the getaway. Do as little or as much as you would like. It's up to you whether you enjoy a slow-paced vacation or an activity-filled trip. If you didn't get to do it all or if you missed something, you can always return for another visit.

4) Your entertainment options are not merely limited to park activities

Did you know that Lake Anna State Park is fifty minutes away from Kings Dominion? Likewise, both Chippokes State Park and First Landing State Park are less than an hour from Busch Gardens. Plus, Shenandoah River State Park is twenty minutes from Skyline Drive and Luray Caverns.

Add to your vacation by visiting attractions near parks. Look around or speak to the park staff for suggestions. For example, my friends and I attended a NASCAR race at Bristol Motor Speedway during our stay at Natural Tunnel State Park. On another getaway, my husband played a round of golf at a course near Breaks Interstate Park. These small towns have a ton to offer. We visited a local family fun center near Occoneechee State Park and it is among my favorite memories.

5) There is something for everyone

No one is left out of the vacation. There is something for everyone in the family to do. My toddler enjoys playgrounds and playing in the water. I enjoy reading outside and watching rainstorms. My husband likes to fish. While we each have our favorite activities, together we enjoy cooking out, boating, swimming, outdoor games, and hiking.

It's not too late to plan your Virginia State Parks getaway!
