"Could this be the best view and location of any cabin at a Virginia State Park?"

That was the question my husband posed to me as we gazed out upon the sunrise over the Potomac River, sipping a strong cup of coffee together from our enclosed porch at Westmoreland State Park. It may have been more of a statement than a question, as I think back.

Perhaps

Those who love this cabin 24 are going to bust my chops after I let the cat out of the bag on this one. But it is like hearing a secret that makes you feel like bursting wide open until you share it! From the moment we checked-in to the very second we left cabin 24 we loved it. We woke up each morning to the most brilliant sunrises that left us speechless, we went to sleep listening to the call of the eagles as they soared along the cliff face.

We were in the eagle's nest

My entire life I have seen the majestic bald eagles high above me, swirling around in the air currents as they searched out their prey. They were always way up there, nesting up there, flying up there, swooping down on occasion to grab an rodent or fish and then swooping right back up, way up there. Without a zoom lens these amazing birds are rarely within reach when I have seen them. I have never actually been at the same level as these beautiful iconic creatures, until now, as we were at cabin 24 at Westmoreland State Park.

On day two of another magnificent sunrise, I grabbed my camera and walked from the cabin to the edge of the cliff that overlooks the river and fossil beach in the distance. I was busy snapping away with my Nikon when my eye caught movement to my right, just barely above my shoulders and lo and behold two Bald Eagles were lighting off a tree and soaring down over the Potomac, into the sunrise they went, I might add.

You have to look hard to see these bald eagles that I only captured as they flew off into the sunrise

Oh the awe

It is hard to even begin to describe to you the awe I felt in that moment as I felt a lump form in my throat, unable to utter a word, even though I wished for my husband to hold my hand or take me into an embrace. It was a very private moment, and a moving moment, also a very patriotic moment. Standing in such an historic place, literally next door neighbors to our first president and forefather of these United States, General George Washington, and knowing that he grew up along the banks of this river, watching eagles soar, well I was without words.

Location Location Location

I did not set out to write a feel-good emotionally driven article for you today, but the feeling you get at cabin 24 is more than just an overnight stay in a park cabin, it is much more.

The cabin itself is the last in the row that are lined up along the bluff high above "the Rivah" as the locals call it. Across the water at night you can see the sparkling lights and colors in Maryland. The yard is large and private, you have a deck with picnic table, the fireplace works and you can burn real wood, and the beds in both bedrooms are comfortable.

The rest of the details are just gravy

I am not sure there is anything else I can report other than, yes indeed; this may be the best location and view of any state park cabin in all of America's State Parks
