Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Adopt-a-Trail at First Landing State Park

We need your help!

Organizations are needed to adopt trails at First Landing State Park

Over the last two years, First Landing State Park has been working hard on trail maintenance projects, upgrading and correcting trails signage, and closing unofficial social trails in the park.  Brian Gordy, First Landing State Park Maintenance Ranger, is working closely with volunteer groups to revitalize the park's "Adopt-a-Trail" program.

Adopting a trail is a committment to clean up the trail and do some trail maintenance every 3 months for a few hours.

every 3 months.

Available for adoption is the paved portion of the Cape Henry trail from the park's Kendall Street border to the Trail Center, the portion of the Cape Henry trail that extends from the Narrows up to the Cape Henry Extension Bridge, all of Fox Run trail, and all of White Hill Lake trail. If you or your organization is interested in adopting a trail at First Landing State Park, please click here to register your group in our online volunteer system or contact Solans Kennedy, First Landing State Park Volunteer Coordinator, at solans.kennedy@dcr.virginia.gov or call 757-412-2320.

Children are welcome to volunteer as part of a group or with parent or guardian.

Adopting-A-Trail is a quarterly commitment to picking up litter on the trail and doing a little bit of trail maintenance such as trimming back shrubs and small tree branches.  Larger projects, such as replacing signage, planting trees, and tree trimming are individual volunteer opportunities and queries are sent out to all registered volunteers in advance of these projects.  Even if you can't 'adopt-a-trail' or volunteer on a regular basis, please consider registering in the volunteer system so you can get special event and special project volunteer emails.

There are many volunteer opportunities throughout the year including the annual Clean the Bay event each June.

There are many individual and group volunteer opportunities at Virginia State Parks including the annual Clean the Bay Day event each June and the First Landing Fall Fest in October.

Many Virginia State Parks have "Adopt-a-Trail" programs, ongoing, and intermittent volunteer opportunities.  Volunteers earn a variety of incentives including camping and cabin stays.  Please click here to register today!

First Landing State Park is located on the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach.
