What does a newlywed couple, a kid on a field trip to Fossil Beach, a family getting ready for a Creek Pick Your Paddle program, and a birder admiring an osprey devour a fish in a pine tree have in common at York River State Park? The Amphitheater.

A Perfect Starting Point

Of all the locations at our park, the amphitheater serves as the staging area for ranger guided events, an economical wedding venue, and a great place to see some of the most beautiful birds in the Chesapeake Bay region.

A Venue for Love

The amphitheater is behind the left side of the Visitor Center and overlooks the York River near the confluence with Taskinas Creek. Towering pine trees add a dramatic contrast with the broad vista. This makes for a memorable backdrop for the couple entering matrimony.

The amphitheater accommodates up to 100 people on tiered bench seating. There is also a 625 sq. ft. stage that is perfect for a band and dancing. While the seating area is wheelchair accessible, the stage is not. There are electrical outlets available and extra equipment, such as a tent, tables, and chairs, can be rented as well.

Field Trip Headquarters

Anyone who has been on a field education trip to our park is familiar with the amphitheater. This is where students, teachers, and chaperones gather for demonstrations and instructions for their adventures.  Typically, Chief Ranger Brad Thomas goes over paddling instruction and safety. I begin fossil hikes and marsh marches with examples of what we will find along our shores.

AmeriCorps interns and seasonal staff also gain experience in sharing their knowledge and skills at this venue. Most of our weekend ranger guided program participants meet here as well.

Views for All

The amphitheater is one of the points of interest on our Bluebird Loop Trail and is a perfect place to enjoy the park. When it is not in use, feel free to take a break from hiking and biking and enjoy the view.  Have a seat at the nearby Maritime Overlook (gazebo) and watch the paddlers head out to the river and back into the creek. In case of a sudden downpour, step inside the Visitor Center to check out the aquatic and reptile displays as well as the gift shop.

While there is no nearby grill, the amphitheater is a nice place for an impromptu picnic. But, don't take my word for it. Ask the osprey who frequently take a freshly caught fish to a pine tree branch. Even these majestic birds like spending time at this part of the park.

Virginia State Parks (May 16, 2016 12:05:06 AM): Here is the link. http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/other/your-comments-count. Glad you enjoyed your visit.

Nick Pericle (May 15, 2016 11:38:30 PM): John - we recently were at the park, on Saturday May 14th, 2016. You showed us the Great Blue Heron through a telescope (I believe it was a telescope). We asked you about some of the snakes we saw while hiking the Taskinas loop, and you told us about the black rat snakes and the black racers. We enjoyed talking to you, and how friendly your were to us. You handed us a piece of paper that had a survey link on it - I lost that sheet of paper. Could you help me with the link? We wanted to leave some positive feedback for you guys! We really enjoyed coming to the park!
