A Camp Host Family's Story

By Jodi RhodesPosted September 14, 2014

I must admit, I was a little concerned how this would work out when a large family pulled in their camper as our new Camp Host at Twin Lakes State Park.  However, it didn’t take long for us all to become one big happy family.

What is a Camp Host? A Camp Host (or Camp Host family in this case) volunteers to assist the park with various campground responsibilities in exchange for some pretty cool benefits. Click here to find out more.

The Britt family chose Twin Lakes State Park because it was in the area they were looking for- not too far from home and close to Aaron’s (Dad’s) work. They checked the Virginia State Parks website for Camp Host availability and the month of August just happened to be available so they decided to try one last “hoorah” before the end of summer and the beginning of school.

Becky Britt (Mom) must take Super Hero vitamins every day!  She ran several miles in the mornings in training for the High Bridge Trail State Park Half Marathon Race. She cleaned campground bathrooms, greeted, checked in and assisted campers, and did an amazing job juggling 4 kids from age 3 to 14 and making sure everyone stayed happy in the process. Becky says, “I enjoyed meeting new people at Twin Lakes State Park and getting to know the park staff. I also enjoyed bonding time with our family.”

In the short month they were at our campground, this Mom was an inspiration to me daily. Her entire family willingly did things to pitch in and help and had a great time in the process. Tyler, age 14 said “Everything was awesome.”  Tyler helped raise and lower the flags among many other things. Katelyn, age 12 cleaned signs, helped with office work, passed out activity flyers and more. Abigail, age 5 and Baker age 3 were active participants in nature programs and events offered by the park.

We were all so sad to see our new Camp Host family leave at the end of the month, tears were actually shed. I asked Becky if she would bring her family back again. “Yes,” she said, “this experience has been most rewarding and positive for all of us.  We will definitely be back next year and will recommend to other friends and family all the wonderful benefits of camp hosting.”

Our Camp Host family summed it up: “We had an amazing time! Everyone at the park has been so nice- like family. As a homeschooling family, we have the benefit of flexibility so we’ll be looking to do camp hosting again at Twin Lakes State Park as well as trying some other Virginia State Parks.” Read Becky’s personal blog here, or if you wish to share any feedback or ask questions about their experience as a Camp Host Family.
