For eighty years Virginia State Parks has been a premier outdoor recreation destination. Now boasting 36 state parks across the state, each park offers unique natural and cultural treasures while providing a venue to reconnect with nature and make family memories. In honor of our 80th anniversary, we created a bucket list of 80 "must do" Virginia State Park experiences.

If you've seen our 80th Anniversary Collector's Edition color brochure, you might already have seen our list of "80 things to do in Virginia State Parks." If not, you can pick one up at a Virginia State Park near you or find the list to download here

80 things to do in Virginia State Parks

To stir your adventurous spirit we created a contest to make checking off the experiences more interesting. Simply log your accomplishments in on our contest site. The first time you will enter your first and last name and an email address. Those three items become your account identifier. Other family members may participate, even if they are too young to have their own email address since users can share an email as long as the first and last name is also not identical. You will be asked to provide a mailing address as well so we can send your prizes. We never share this information with anyone. After the first entry, you will have an opportunity to update the information if it changes.

The experience will be listed under the park that appears in the list so you select the park and the experience. Select "Any Park" for the handful of experiences that can be completed at any of our parks. Check out the prizes based on how many items you complete:

Prize
10 Acorn Stress Ball
20 Waterproof smartphone case
30 Carabineer pocket knife
40 10,000 loyalty program points
40+ Entry in the drawing for a $500 overnight stay gift certificate

While you visit parks on your quest to accomplish the 80 Things, be sure to also participate in our Trail Quest program. Log each park you visit and earn unique hiking pins as you visit more parks. Find out more about this program here

You must complete the activities during 2016 and can only count each item once (including those activities that can be achieved at any park). Qualifying activities must be entered on the contest site no later than January 7, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Only one loyalty program prize per household. The winner of the $500 gift certificate will be selected on January 8, 2017 by a random number generator from those participants that completed at least 40 activities. The winner will be announced in a blog post on January 8.

Bob Diller (August 11, 2016 02:11:27 PM): We received our Acorn stress ball yesterday and are also awaiting our third state park pin which should arrive any day,but that's a different program.

Virginia State Parks (July 04, 2016 09:31:12 PM): I started to do that at one point but there were only a handful of the 80 that had a one time date during the year and many have already past at this poimt. There are others that are offered periodically, specific programs that are mentioned. The easiest way to find those is to use our events search tool and look up the offered programs at the specific park. http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/park-events.

The Mason Neck Swanfall and Occoneechee Pow Wow were errors on the list that weren't caught until it was published.

The Sailor's Creek luminary is held around Veteran;s Day - usually the Saturday night closest. We have to cancel if it rains.

The Leesylvania Battle of Freestone Point is commemorated 9/24-25.

The Staunton River Star Party will be around Oct 24-30.

Karl Schwartz (July 02, 2016 09:24:08 AM): Do you have a list of dates for the specific activities on the list? For example, the Steam and Gas Engine Show at Chippokes, the Music Festival at Grayson, etc? We can look it up, but I thought it might be nice to publish on the website and get even more participation? Thank you!

sharon (June 20, 2016 10:06:28 AM): i hope i win the contest

Virginia State Parks (May 30, 2016 01:44:47 AM): I see a total of 5 items on your account. The 5th one was just claimed 5/27. If you have specific questions can you email me the specifics at nancy.heltman@dcr.virginia.gov?

Gloria (May 29, 2016 05:10:16 PM): I signed up for the contest when it was first announced, and had several of the listed things to do added to my history. However, when I tried to list two more things, I received the screen showing that the submissions had been received, but they aren't showing up on my history. And ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

Teresa (April 24, 2016 09:04:49 PM): Game on..learned about this contest during our visit to Pocahontas State Park today and already completed 3 of the 80 including our fossil hunt at Chippokes last week.

Marcia (March 28, 2016 10:09:33 PM): Here

Kay clifton (March 21, 2016 11:12:07 AM): I'm ready
