Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

It's a sign of the times, when the daily drudgery of work, school and home life begins to spin you around like a pinwheel in the wind. You know you need another break, but feel like next year’s vacation is just too far away and there is nothing you can do about it.

The seasons are rapidly changing and you long to get outside again, but recall all the planning and labor that goes into camping. But wait, there is hope in sight...we have a solution just for you.

1. Each day begins to feel like the last, and the summer is now a far-away memory

You made some great memories at a Virginia State Park this summer (this is Douthat State Park)

Fun adventures make great fond memories

Why do you have to endure the daily grind without pause when you have nearly 40 Virginia State Parks at your fingertips? Why wait a full year to recreate when you can go any weekend, or weekdays throughout the year. You and I both know that when all the days begin to blur into one, it's time to get away.

There are 20 Virginia State Parks offering more than 300+ cabins year-round. We have parks with year-round campgrounds available as well, if you prefer camping.

2. You begin to daydream about next year's vacation

You had a wonderful time this summer

You know next year's family vacation is so far away, how will you ever cope until then? You don't have to; you just need an in between vacation as a respite from the day to day to energize you and recharge your batteries.

You can book a cabin for two or three nights and it will make the world of difference. Take a long weekend; go ahead you know you deserve it.

3. Sitting at your desk, home computer or device you browse getaways online

Dreaming about a getaway you find yourself searching online discounts and specials in Virginia (This is Douthat State Park)

A stroll around the lake at Douthat State Park is in tall order

Dreams can become a reality at Virginia State Parks, instead of considering that larger investment in an annual vacation, think about a 2 or 3-night getaway as an affordable alternative, and a necessity.

Summer fun is exciting, but so is a leisurely walk around the lake, like above at Douthat State Park. Space and a place to breathe and take in the gorgeous scenery.

4. You imagine waking up with the great outdoors right outside your window

You imagine waking up here...at a Virginia State Park

When you stay in a cabin or park your RV in a woodsy park setting you leave the city clatter and mayhem behind and wake up instead to bird song, wildlife and natural scenery, and that does a body good.

You need to breathe fresh air in the great outdoors as much as you need food and water to drink.

These parks are here for all of us, offering a respite from the fast-paced world in which we live.

5. You follow Virginia State Parks on Facebook

Camping and spending time outdoors is the ultimate getaway when you visit a Virginia State Park

All cabins have firepits and grills

You see the fun photos posted by our social media team, of families making memories in the parks.

You have also seen the Thursday "Last Minute Cabin Discounts" posted on Facebook and Twitter and want to one day take advantage of those, but the timing is never right. You even share them with your spouse and friends. You are eager to save a little hard-earned cash, and look at the cabin rental rates from time to time. Just to see what parks have availability, and dreaming of sitting in front of a cozy fire when the weather is chilly outside.
