This park is set amongst some of Virginia's most breathtaking mountain scenery. There are four miles of streams, a 50-acre lake stocked with trout, and a seasonal swimming beach. You can camp, rent a boat, fish, and even stay in a lodge or cabin at this stunning mountain getaway.

But one of the real draws for many is the more than 43 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better hiking and biking gem like Douthat State Park with cabins and camping in under an hour from Roanoke with over 43 miles of trails plus a lake to boot.

1. | THE VIEWS

Every hiking trail at Douthat State Park offers incredible scenery and views, it's inescapable

Every hiking trail at Douthat State Park offers incredible mountain views. It's inescapable.

You can set out into the woods in any direction at Douthat and end up with a knock your socks off view. See a trail map that shows details of scenic overlooks and sights of interest along the way. Tuscarora Overlook is one of the park's favorites.

Some may tell you not to bother, but you may think this hike is worth the effort. If you only see a trickle, then so be it. But if you stumble upon Blue Suck Falls after a heavy rain, you're in for a real treat. Plus, this trail is on the way to other trails that you will really enjoy.

3. | PET FRIENDLY

Virginia State Parks are pet friendly; keep them on a leash and bring plenty of water.

There is absolutely no reason to leave your four-legged family members at home. They're our best cheerleaders to get us off the couch and outside. They provide a good incentive for hiking. Just remember to keep them on a leash at all times, no longer than six feet. It's recommended that you do a tick check before you get back in the car to go home (for the pet and yourself).

4. | MOUNTAIN BIKING MECCA

Douthat is called Mountain Biking Mecca and more fun than Disneyland

Douthat has been called a mountain biking mecca and more fun than Disneyland.

They say this is the Disneyland of mountain biking. Not only are there more than 40 miles of wooded trails to choose from throughout the year, ranging from easy to difficult, there are also adjacent trails worth exploring in the George Washington Forest.

5. | BRUSHY HOLLOW SWINGING BRIDGE

The trails range from easy to difficult, so be sure to map them out before you go.

Brushy Hollow Trail is 3.72 miles and ends as you cross this cool swinging bridge. You can hike or bike as much or as little as you like, some trails offer loops, and some are one way in and offer an opportunity to connect and come back on another. Each trail will be rated and provide the distance in miles so you can determine if they are viable for the little ones.
