Outer Space

When the sun goes down you will find yourself discovering an astronomically different sky altogether at Virginia's only international dark sky park - Staunton River State Park in Halifax County, Virginia. Due to its lack of light pollution, Staunton River State Park received this rare designation as an International Dark Sky Park in 2015.

Each spring and fall CHAOS bring and share their telescopes and equipment with the public at these celestial star parties.

If you cannot make the bi-annual Star Party, CHAOS has graciously donated two powerful telescopes that overnight guests of the park you can check out from the park office to investigate the cosmos yourself from your cabin, campsite or nearby open field at Staunton River State Park. There are also star gazing programs scheduled throughout the year. Contact the park to inquire at (434) 572-4623 or email here.

The International Dark Sky Places conservation program recognizes and promotes excellent stewardship of the night sky. Learn more about IDSP here.
