The natural area preserve portion of the farm features upland and bottomland hardwood forests, marsh communities and important nesting, roosting, and foraging habitat for bald eagles. The property is situated mostly on broad, low-lying terrace deposits bordering the Potomac River. Chotank Creek is a large, meandering creek system which flows into the Potomac River. A small area in the southwestern portion of the preserve is situated on hilly uplands. The significant natural community types observed on the property include brackish scrub, seasonal ponds, swamp forests, as well as dry oak-hickory forest communities that are considered significant because of their size, quality, or unusual vegetation composition. Two active bald eagle nests are found on the property. This property on the Potomac River is a place of frequent eagle congregations.
