Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Great American Campout

The annual Great American Campout brings out thousands across the country to enjoy the outdoors and sleep under the stars. This is a great opportunity to check out the new additions to the park. All programs are family friendly. This will also be a great opportunity to view the batteaux (Colonial flat-bottom river boats) as float by on the historic James River.

10-11 a.m. Learning Local Critters: Join a ranger and learn all about the local creatures and critters that live in the fields and forests that make up Powhatan State Park, we will be making a track "cheat sheet" which you can take with you on your next hike.

10 a.m. - 12 p.m. How to set up Base Camp: Learn how to set up a proper campsite with a ranger and get to know what you should pack on any outdoor adventure. We will have demonstrations on how to set up various styles of tents, and what gear is best suited for each occasion.

8 - 10 p.m. Astronomy Program: Join a ranger and take a look up to the night sky. We will be learning about the history of astronomy and learn some of the constellations we can view in our night sky. Meet at the Trailhead parking lot.
