Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Connect your family to nature with our special programming for Kids to Parks Day. Parking fees are waived for all Virginia State Park license plate holders this day.

9:30 a.m.   Beginner Bird Watching @ the Howe House Front Porch
Grab a pair of binoculars and learn about some of the common birds around the park. 

11 a.m.   Claytor Crafts - Pinecone Owls @ the Interpretive Campfire Circle in Campground D
Join a ranger to create something special from natural elements found in the park.

2 p.m.   Guided Track Trails Hike @ Shady Ridge Trail Head (Near Shelter 2)
Go on an interactive ranger-led hike and use all your senses to learn something new about the park and our environment along the way. 

4 p.m.   Reptiles! @ the Interpretive Campfire Circle in Campground D
Learn about some of our scaly friends with the help of our reptilian volunteers. 

8 p.m.   Sky Fishing @ the Interpretive Campfire Circle in Campground D
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's BUGS! Join our rangers for a campfire and some sky-fishing. What kind of bugs will we attract to the light?
