Have you ever looked closely at the landscape of a particular area as an artifact? The Chippoax Trace Trail is a wonderful glimpse into the vast history that Chippokes State Park encompasses.  Meander through woodlands and agricultural fields, accompanied by a ranger, all the while traveling alongside what now remains of the Trace. Learn about the unique history of the Chippoax Trace Trail and uncover a little more about those who once lived here on the land or nearby in the 1600s.

Did this road once truly lead to a wharf where ships could dock to receive goods, ship crops, trade, and meet with family and friends?

The Chippoax Trace Trail is roughly 1 mile of trail.  Meet your interpretive guide at the Chippoax Trace Trailhead located to the right of the parking lot. We suggest wearing shoes for hiking and walking (differing terrain) and mud or muck boots if it has rained. Bring water, binoculars, and whatever else you need to enjoy your time on the trail.

The end of the Chippoax Trace Trail where hikers can overlook the salt marshes that lead out to the James River.
