National Public Lands Day

Location of Bear Creek Lake State Park in Virginia

Where

Bear Creek Lake State Park, 22 Bear Creek Lake Rd., Cumberland, VA 23040.
Various locations

When

Sept. 24, 2022. 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

This no parking fee day is set aside to highlight state as well as national public lands. It is rewarding to take some time to care for them. In doing so we help keep these lands public and healthy.

At 10 a.m., a 60-minute service opportunity will be held at the archery range to reduce invasive plants. Many wonderful plants from around the world can enhance home gardens if they are kept under control, but devastating if they spread to the native environment. After a talk and walk to see the impact first-hand, you will get the opportunity to help control their spread. Closed-toe footwear required. Please note that archery range has no water or restrooms immediately available. While not required to participate, you can pre-register by emailing: bcguide@dcr.virginia.gov.

At 11:30 a.m., stop by the Legacy Wayside for a ranger-led conversation entitled: “Here We Stand”. The land that holds each Virginia State Park has its own story. There is a separate sense of place in each, and this park is no exception. The environmental history of this place will be told by highlighting the people and actions that have eventually brought us all here together today. We'll also explore how our actions now can reduce threats to public lands in the future.
