Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Twisting fibers to make cordage strong enough to fashion fishing nets was an essential skill amongst the early Powhatans and you can learn how to do it too! Pre-register for this series program where you will learn how to make your own fishing nets starting with the cordage, and then test your net against one of the most famed water dwellers. This program is ideal for participants ages 8+ and pre-registration is required through the park office to include a $5 charge which covers all supplies. The program will meet at the outdoor classroom and participants will get to take their nets and cordage home with them. Please call the park office at (804) 642-2419 to reserve your spot or for any inquiries about this program.
