First Day Hike

Location of Bear Creek Lake State Park in Virginia

Where

Bear Creek Lake State Park, 22 Bear Creek Lake Rd., Cumberland, VA 23040.
Bear Creek Hall

When

Jan. 1, 2022. 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Whether you attend our guided hike or select a self-guided option, visit Bear Creek Lake State Park to celebrate with a First Day Hike.

At 11 a.m. take a stroll on a ranger-led hike during which we'll see how the forest adapts to the changing seasons, and talk about how the land in the Bear Creek neighborhood has been changed by many people over many years.

If you prefer a walk of your own, the park has several miles of moderate difficulty rated trails, including Channel Cat Trail, with signs that interpret how a forest grows, and Lost Barr Trail, a section of which interprets the human connection with the land. If venturing along the Cumberland Multi-Use Trail, or the Willis River Trail, please be advised that it is hunting season in the Cumberland State Forest so the wearing of a blaze orange hat or vest is recommended.
