In accordance with the Code of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is updating the master plan for York River State Park located in York County, VA. The purpose of the master plan is to guide the future physical development of the park by describing the park’s unique natural, cultural and physical resources, evaluating park needs with respect to future facilities and improvements to existing amenities, and engaging with the public to align the plan’s recommendations with demand for outdoor recreation opportunities in the commonwealth and region. Virginia state park master plans are updated every 10 years.
York River State Park is located is 9801 York River Park Road, Williamsburg, Va. 23188.
York River State Park is known for its rare and delicate estuarine environment, where freshwater and saltwater meet to create a rich habitat for marine and plant life. It is on the York River and is designated as a Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The pristine environment offers clues to a rich natural and cultural history and hosts fossil beds and Colonial and Native American artifacts. Programs, activities and visitor center displays focus on the history, use, wildlife and preservation of the York River and its marshes. More than 40 miles of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails allow visitors to explore the marsh, river shoreline and forests. A boat ramp, fresh and salt water fishing spots, a fishing pier, playgrounds, picnic shelters and seasonal boat rentals are available.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation will hold a public information meeting at 6:30 p.m. on May 19, 2026, at the York River State Park Visitor Center. This meeting will introduce the public to the master planning process, summarize existing resources, notify the public about upcoming public outreach and engagement opportunities, and obtain input regarding new and improved recreational facilities at the park.
We are asking park visitors to provide input regarding preferred activities and needs for future facilities at the park as part of the York River State Park Master Plan update. Your input is valuable to ensure that the Master Plan recommendations address and align with what visitors value and wish to see added and improved at the park.
