Virginia announces $110 million in flood preparedness funding
Applications for the sixth round of the Community Flood Preparedness Fund are due Monday, Dec. 1.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation today announced the opening of the sixth round of the Community Flood Preparedness Fund.

Communities across the commonwealth are invited to apply for $50 million in grants and $35 million in loans to support flood mitigation projects that enhance community resilience and reduce the impact of flooding. A further $25 million in grants are available for Coastal Storm Risk Management and Flood Risk Management projects that have received construction authorization from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2025.

The fund was established to provide funding for hazard mitigation and flood prevention projects to address the growing threat from recurrent flooding, sea level rise and extreme weather. The fund continues to prioritize projects that are in concert with local, state and federal floodplain management standards, local resilience plans and the Virginia Coastal Resilience Master Plan.

Information about the fund, eligibility rules, application procedures and instructions can be found in the fund’s grant manual posted on the Community Flood Preparedness Fund (CFPF) website: www.dcr.virginia.gov/cfpf.

All CFPF Round 6 applications must be submitted through DCR’s WebGrants Portal. A training video demonstrating how to use the portal is available on the CFPF website.

Since 2021, the Community Flood Preparedness Fund has awarded over $220 million to Virginia communities for innovative flood resilience and mitigation projects. Through these investments, communities are better prepared to address the challenges of increasing flood risks.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, in cooperation with the Virginia Resources Authority, administers the fund and grant program. DCR oversees the state’s floodplain management, flood resilience planning and dam safety programs and assists communities with requirements related to the National Flood Insurance Program.
