GREENBAY, VA - Twin Lakes State Park will host a 3-day event in honor of Juneteenth in partnership with the Friends of Twin Lakes from July 5-7 at the Cedar Crest Conference Center. The event will include music, history, a walk around the lake and guest speakers.

Dr. Opal Lee, who is often described as the “grandmother of Juneteenth,” will be the main guest speaker at this event. Dr. Lee is a retired teacher, counselor and major activist in the movement to make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday.

“Save the date for our 3-day extravaganza in honor of Juneteenth,” said Twin Lakes State Park Manager Kevin Faubion. “July 6 is the main event as we invite the public to the park for music, songs, food and a special talk by Dr. Opal Lee. We are excited to share the park’s history and to include such a powerful guest speaker that helped make this holiday recognized federally.”

The park will host a “Down Home Family Gathering” event in the afternoon on July 5. Park staff and the public are invited to attend a church service with Dr. Lee. On July 7.

While the main event will be held in July, the park will still offer programs on the weekend before Juneteenth. On June 15 the park will have a Goodwin Lake Trail Guided Hike that is about 1 mile and guests will journey through time to discover more about the park and its rich history.

More details about Juneteenth events will follow so keep checking the Twin Lakes State Park events page for more information.
