RICHMOND – James Wright has been named the new park manager of Staunton River State Park in Scottsburg.

Wright is not new to the Virginia State Park system, having served as the assistant park manager at Staunton River since September 2021. He started his career with Virginia State Parks in 2011 as chief ranger at Westmoreland State Park, and also served as assistant park manager at Shenandoah River and Seven Bends state parks.

"I am pleased to welcome James to this leadership position at Staunton River State Park,” said District V Region Manager Tim Vest. “He brings a passion for the outdoors and his leadership and experience will be an asset to the park and the community."

As park manager, Wright will oversee staff, operations and expenditures providing for programs and services to ensure visitor expectations are met and the natural, recreational and cultural resources at the park are protected for future generations.

After receiving his degree in Health and Fitness, with a concentration in parks and outdoor recreation, Wright says his love for the outdoors is what drew him to Virginia State Parks. He is an avid mountain biker and you might just encounter him along River Bank Trail in his spare time.

“I like to share the importance of getting outside and protecting our natural resources with our visitors and community,” Wright said. “I look forward to building further relationships with the community and developing a strong volunteer program at Staunton River State Park.”

He started his duties on Jan. 10 and his immediate plans include developing a friends group at the park that will include community involvement and diverse interests and projects.
