New River Trail State Park master plan to be discussed Oct. 29 in Austinville

RICHMOND — A public meeting to discuss long-range planning for New River Trail State Park will be held Oct. 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the gym at Jackson Memorial Elementary School, 4424 Fort Chiswell Rd., Austinville, Virginia 24312.

Staff with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will provide an overview of proposed updates to the park’s master plan. DCR manages Virginia State Parks.

Each state park has a master plan that guides development. Plans are updated every 10 years.
The draft master plan revisions for New River Trail State Park include the construction of cabins, campgrounds, yurts, bathhouses and public restrooms.

New River Trail State Park is a 57-mile linear park that follows a former railroad right-of-way. The park parallels the scenic and historic New River for 39 miles and passes through Carroll, Grayson, Pulaski and Wythe counties, the city of Galax, and the towns of Allisonia, Austinville, Draper, Fries, Hiwassee, Ivanhoe and Pulaski.

Comments about this master plan update will be accepted through Nov. 28. Written comments should be submitted to jennifer.wampler@dcr.virginia.gov.

DCR manages Virginia’s 38 state parks. For more information about master plans, visit www.dcr.virginia.gov/recreational-planning/masterplans.
