Three long-time parks and recreation professionals have been recognized for their roles in developing the state’s comprehensive outdoor recreation plan.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation presented the awards Nov. 6 during a conference of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society in Roanoke.

Awardees are:

John Carnifax
Director of Parks and Recreation, James City County

Carol Steele
Director of Parks and Recreation, Gloucester County

Paul Gilbert
Executive Director, NOVA Parks

All three are members of the Virginia Outdoors Plan Technical Advisory Committee, a broad panel that guides development of the state’s comprehensive plan for outdoor recreation and land conservation. The plan is issued every five years.

“Carol, John and Paul have been outstanding contributors to the Virginia Outdoors Plan Technical Advisory Committee,” said Danette Poole, head of DCR’s planning division. “They’ve helped bring the local parks and recreation perspective to statewide planning efforts. Those insights are vital as we work to keep services and programs relevant for Virginians in the 21st century.”

VRPS is private nonprofit professional organization affiliated with the National Recreation and Park Association. VRPS and DCR have collaborated since 1965 on the Virginia Outdoors Plan.
