York River State Park to kick off paddling season with annual Burning of the Socks April 11

(RICHMOND) – York River State Park will kick off the spring paddling season with the annual “Burning of the Socks” Saturday, April 11.

York River, in James City County, will host this special event where visitors are encouraged to take off their socks, drop them in the bonfire and put on water shoes or sandals. The sock-burning will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by an afternoon guided canoe and kayak trip on Taskinas Creek to the York River.

“‘Burning of the Socks has become a tradition at York River State Park to welcome the warm spring weather and kick off the water-based recreation season,” said Education Specialist John Gresham.

The  event is free. Reservations and a small fee are required for the guided canoe and kayak trip. However, since space is limited in the park’s boats, visitors are encouraged to bring their own canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Those with their own boats can join the guided paddling trip at no charge. Parking fees apply to all visitors.

For more information contact the park at yorkriver@dcr.virginia.gov or call the park office at 757-566-3036. The rain or weather-related cancellation date is April 24.

York River offers a variety of water-based programs through spring and summer including afternoon and moonlight paddling trips, children’s fishing clinics, net seining fishing programs and children’s summer camps. Visit www.virginiastateparks.gov for a complete list of upcoming programs.

The award-winning Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. For more information about Virginia State Parks’ activities and amenities or to make reservations in one of the more than 1,800 campsites or 300 climate-controlled cabins, call the Virginia State Parks Customer Service Center at 800-933-PARK (7275) or visit www.virginiastateparks.gov.
