Job Duties

The Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Natural Heritage, is currently hiring for a Natural Heritage Tribal Liaison.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is the state’s lead conservation agency, and it takes a diverse agency to conserve resources for a diverse commonwealth.

The Natural Heritage Tribal Liaison position will help facilitate and conduct communications between DCR’s Division of Natural Heritage (VDNH) and Tribal Nations and related partners (including APNEP).

The NH Tribal Liaison will be responsible for:

  • Supporting and participating in all aspects of outreach and engagement with Tribal citizens and representatives, primarily but not exclusively focused on those with ancestral or extant ties to southeastern VA. A particular focus of this position will be creating opportunities to listen and support Tribal issues and goals and identify. overlapping priorities with DNH’s Program mission and resource protection goals.
  • Developing, maintaining, and updating Tribal contacts, initiating introductory conversations, facilitating meetings, field trips, workdays, and events, in collaboration with staff from the Indigenous Conservation Council of the Chesapeake Bay (ICC) and the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership -Tribal Coastal Resilience Connections (APNEP-TCRC). Track outreach efforts for grant reporting purposes.
  • Participating in VDNH Protection project planning & development, facilitating data use and data sharing agreements with Tribal contacts, and gaining experience in grant writing and use of supporting digital tools, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Gaining experience and introduction to work activities across VDNH including all phases of natural resource management, monitoring, and inventory.


Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for Commonwealth of Virginia benefits (health care, paid leave, etc.) and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

DCR provides the opportunity for wage employees to participate in tax-deferred compensation programs, supplemental disability insurance, and supplemental retirement accounts made available through the Commonwealth’s provider network at the employee’s expense.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Proven ability to conduct outreach and foster engagement with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in the coordination and facilitation of meetings, events, and/or field trips.
  • Experience with data collection and management.
  • Demonstrated writing skills sufficient to prepare work summary reports.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Additional Considerations

  • Demonstrated track record in engaging and co-developing programs with Tribal Nations and/or Indigenous communities.

A valid Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.

  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts, such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
