DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.

Virginia’s award-winning state park system, a division of DCR, boasts an incredible and diverse array of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources including parks in the mountains, on the ocean, on the Chesapeake Bay, on 8 major rivers, on 4 major lakes, 4 rail trails, 3 battlefield sites, and 32 sites listed on the National Historic Registry. Our parks encompass over 75,000 acres, offering campsites, cabins, trails, shorelines, lakes and ponds, international dark sky sites, and over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.

This position will utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to maintain geospatial data related to Virginia State Parks with a primary focus on the creation of maps to enhance the visitor experience and operational efficiency for staff. This position not only uses technical GIS skills, but also design, an understanding of cartographic principles, and knowledge of environmental sciences. In this position, you will:

Cartographic and GIS Duties:

  • Redesign and create park maps for print and web
  • Assist the GIS Manager with ad-hoc GIS map creation
  • Assist the GIS Manager with geospatial analysis tasks
  • Work with park staff for mapping needs
  • Conduct field surveys for geospatial data collection

Resource Management Team Support:

  • Opportunities to assist field staff across the state with ecological and cultural needs, i.e., prescribed burns
  • Participates in occasional daily and overnight travel for field work and trainings.
  • Assist with management of various datasets as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Proficiency with cartography and graphic design
  • Demonstrated of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills and abilities, including familiarity with ESRI software such as or equivalent to ArcPro, Field Maps and ArcGIS Online
  • Proven ability to develop and produce ArcGIS Maps, ArcGIS StoryMaps, utilize ArcGIS HUB or equivalent, as it relates to resource management.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, or equivalent products.
  • Experience with field surveys for data collection
  • Valid Driver's License required.

Additional Considerations

  • Background in Environmental Sciences; with basic knowledge of natural or cultural resources management.
  • Basic knowledge of working with SQL databases.
  • Ability to assist with some basic graphic design tasks (non-mapping related)

This position is based out of our Richmond, VA office, but there will be telework options available.

  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
