DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.
Generally applications must be made through the RMS (electronic state application). We will, however, accept paper applications for some state park slots. Be sure to refer to the individual recruitment for specific requirements.
Certain positions require a criminal background check, a conflict of interest financial statement or both. Law-enforcement positions require a fingerprint-based FBI investigation. DCR is an EEO/AA/ADA Employer.

Hiring Rate: $17.00 per hour
Position Number: SE004
Responsible, result-oriented individual who is able to work at times without supervision and who can prioritize tasks and interact positively with the public. Duties focus on assisting park leadership in managing the daily operation and maintenance of park facilities, grounds, and equipment. Directing the work of the maintenance staff in the absence of the park ranger is a major element of the position. A large portion of the work includes maintenance duties for the facilities, equipment, and landscaping. Other tasks may include assisting the lead education specialist with interpretive programming and assist with park merchandise sales operations.
Minimum Qualifications: Applicant must have the ability to understand simple verbal and written instructions, work in a team environment and attend mandatory paid training to comply with OSHA requirements. Must be able to work with crew members in the performance of their tasks. Valid driver’s license is required.
Additional Considerations: Previous Supervisory experience and/or experience in the following areas is preferred: lawn maintenance, plumbing, electrical repair, construction, facility/equipment/vehicle maintenance and repair. Knowledge of and ability to operate tractors, commercial mowing equipment, power tools, hand tools, etc., is preferred. Previous work in a park or related setting is preferred.
Special Requirements: For all positions, experience is not required, but is preferred. Weekends and holiday work required. We provide on the job training. Employees may be required to perform other park related duties during emergencies, or on a non-recurrent basis. Seasonal summer jobs can be an outstanding first step toward a lasting career with the park service.
There are no health benefits or paid vacation leave associated with the job. Employees are limited to working no more than 1500 hours in 12 months from May 1 to April 30. Position does not include benefits. Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check. Employer participates in e-Verify.
