Bridge at Staunton River Battlefield State Park to close for repairs and maintenance

RANDOLPH, Va. — The Staunton River Bridge at Staunton River Battlefield State Park is scheduled to close for approximately six months beginning May 17. During this time, access to the Battlefield Trail from the Clover Center will be closed. The Clover Visitor Center will be open on weekends and the rest of the park will be open seven days a week.

“The main bridge will be barricaded on each end and the trail will be open right up to the barricades,” Park Manager David Gunnells said. “Most visitors will want to park at Roanoke Station in Randolph and from there they will be able to walk most of the trail.”

The project will include replacement of the decking and sides of the main bridge, replacement of damaged railroad ties beneath the decking and stabilization of the trail at both ends of the bridge. A concrete parking space will be built on the Halifax side of the trail to allow easier access to the battlefield trail for people with mobility issues.
