When

April 21, 2024. 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Explore the Panhandle Multi-use Trail on this 5-mile hike. The Occoneechee Panhandle has an amazing history beginning with the Occaneechi Indians then transitioning to a thriving farming community through the 18th and 19th centuries. We will visit the site of the Occoneechee Farm. Field Jefferson, President Thomas Jefferson’s uncle, established the farm in the mid 1700’s. The remaining footprint of the farm features a farm manager’s residence, livestock barn, ice pit, tobacco barns, cemetery, and more.

The terrain for this hike has gentle rolling grade along most of the trail with no elevation. This hike is suitable for both beginner and intermediate hikers. The trail follows the shoreline of Buggs Island Lake along many sections which can sometimes render the trail wet and/or muddy. Please dress appropriately and bring a pack with extra water. Footwear designed for hiking and with good ankle support is recommended.
