Do you know which one of the 36 Virginia State Parks made the
top 20 destinations for stunning parks in the USA?

If you guess High Bridge Trail State Park, then you are correct!

High Bridge Trail State Park

High Bridge is over 2,400 feet long and 125 feet above the Appomattox River.

When you think of parks, do you think of playgrounds full of children, people and their pets or beautiful scenery?

According to a USA Today article, all 50 states have elaborate state park systems (that differ from federally run parks) that offer a variety of attractions that are different than your typical ideals of parks. All state parks are designed to protect the historic lands and the environment. Last year alone High Bridge Trail had close to 200,000 people visit the bridge and the local communities of Burkeville, Rice, Farmville, Prospect and Pamplin.

High Bridge Trail is  31 miles and is a limestone based trail that offers a wide, level surface.

When you visit High Bridge Trail you will see an old Norfolk & Southern rail bed that has been converted into an awesome limestone based trail that offers a wide, level surface. While the 2400 foot long bridge crosses 125 feet above the Appomattox River, and is the center attraction, it is also connected with 31 miles of trail that is great for family bike rides, hiking or horseback riding.  High Bridge Trail has been designated as a Virginia Historic Landmark, is also on the National Register of Historic places and is one of the longest recreational bridges in Virginia as well as the U.S.

Oh June 22, 1914 the rail traffic was diverted from the original brick supports to the newly completed steel viaduct that are used today by High Bridge Trail. Join us on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 8 p.m. as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the change of piers.

Trail is perfect for walkers

The trail is great for family bike rides, hiking or horseback riding

Whether you are looking for a short trip or a long one, there are many places that you can access the trail. If you are looking for the closest parking lot to the bridge try the River Road access. A walk from the parking lot, across the bridge and then back is 2.8 miles. If you are looking for a longer ride or walk try parking in Rice which is 3.1 miles from the bridge or park at Main Street Plaza in Farmville which is 4.5 miles from the bridge.

If you are an avid bike rider don’t forget to try the new mountain bike trails that are now open to the public. They are located half way between Main Street Plaza and the River Road parking area. For those of you who are advanced riders check out the Burnside Technical Mountain Bike Trail and for those of you who are not so advanced in your skills try the Earley Mountain Bike Loop Trail.

Just one reminder for everyone (pets included) who uses the trail, there is no water available, so please make sure to bring your own.
