If you haven't already made your plans to visit one of our Virginia State Parks on January 1, 2014 for our First Day Hikes, what are you waiting for?

All of our parks will offer a guided or self-guided hike or activity (most parks have ranger led hikes) and if the time or hike doesn't strike your fancy, just come out for the day and do your own thing! This is a family-friendly activity and a great way to start the New Year!

To add excitement to this event and encourage participation, we are also holding a First Day Hikes photo contest. You will need to take a picture while you are enjoying one of the parks on January 1 and upload it to our contest site no later than January 2 at 1 p.m. (EST). You can read details on how to enter and how the winners will be selected on the contest website or our Facebook tab (please note that tabs will not show up on Facebook mobile apps so use the contest website if you want to access on a mobile device). Photos uploaded directly to our Facebook page, not on the contest site, will not count as entries.

The prizes: a week stay in one of our family lodges that sleep 15-16 people, a week stay in one of our cabins (up to a 3 bedroom), annual Your Passport Plus parking passes.

The ten day forecast is showing cold but dry so it should be chilly but otherwise a great day to hike! Wear good sturdy shoes or hiking boots, dress warmly, and bring water and your camera. See you there!
